History

Institute for the Ages grew out of “Aging: the Possibilities,” an initiative of SCOPE that engaged nearly 1,000 people to explore how communities adapt to demographic shifts and what it meant to be the oldest large county in the country.  SCOPE is a nonprofit organization at the center of citizen connection and action in Sarasota County.

The Institute owes its existence to SCOPE and a diverse steering committee of local leaders from the private and public sector, higher education, and senior service providers. As a sign of support, the county Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County places the Institute as an integral part of its strategic plan.

In 2009 the Institute worked with world-renowned RTI International to develop a sound business plan—through research and engagement with more than 200 representatives of global businesses, prominent research organizations, and the local community.
